Social media marketing is selling your product using the social media networks like Facebook, Twitter and all the others. When you are promoting something on your website you can assume that the visitor is there because they are interested in the topic of your site. As long as the product you are selling is related to the topic of your site you can do well overtly promoting it. This is definitely not the case with social marketing; people are there because they want to interact socially not because they are interested in what you are selling. In fact most people will become very angry if you are overtly selling a product so you are going to have to take an approach that is more subtle.

The key to being a successful social media marketer is to use social media the way it is supposed to be used. Rather than trying to sell your product what you want to do is build a relationship with the people you meet on the social sites. The idea is to find a group of people that are interested in a topic that is related to the product that you are selling and establish yourself as an expert in the field. What you are really doing is branding yourself, you want people to trust you and think of you as an expert in the field. Once you have successfully accomplished this you can subtly recommend the product that you are selling. If people trust you and think that you know what you are talking about they will take your recommendation seriously. The one thing that you have to avoid is to appear to be overtly selling; this will kill your chances of success almost immediately.
