One of the biggest changes in the way that we communicate has been the development of social networking. The internet was a dramatic change in itself but social networking has completely changed the internet. At this point social networking is mainly done as a leisure activity but more and more practical uses are being found. One of the biggest is for marketing. This is something that social networking is ideally suited to if you do it correctly.

Social networking is nothing more than allowing people who share a common interest in building a relationship on the internet. In most cases people will build a profile that allows them to share their information with other people. At the same time there will usually be a feature that allows you to find the profiles of other people who share the same interest as you. Far and away the best known of the social networking sites is Facebook but there are actually hundreds of them. Social networking has had a dramatic impact on the way that people interact. It is now possible to communicate with a many more people than would otherwise be possible. On the other hand social networking has also tended to narrow people’s perspective since people usually only interact with people who share their views.

While most people think of social networking as a leisure activity it does have a great many useful applications. Social networking is a very efficient way to disseminate information which makes it an excellent tool for education purposes. The massive growth in people pursuing online degrees in recent years is largely due to the technology used for social networking. Since students can interact with their teacher and each other it makes the experience much more like being in a classroom. Social networking is also used widely by people when they are looking for a job. Networking has been used to find a job for years, online networking is the natural extension of this.

Another area where social networking can potentially be used is for business purposes. A lot of companies have attempted to use social networking as a way of communicating with their customers but this approach is still largely underused. The problem with using social networking for business purposes is that it needs to be done in a different way than most companies are used to working. In the past when a company wanted to get their message out to consumers it was done through advertising. This won’t work with social networking since very few people are going to join your network just to be advertised to. In order to get people to join your company’s network they have to get something out of it. This is something that a lot of companies struggle with, the result is a flood of social marketing specialists aiming to make money by helping companies use social networks to market their product.
